12 Days of Christmas Interview with Olive Young of Ouroboros
Please introduce yourself
Olive Young, founder and creative director of Ouroboros.
Tell us about when you first discovered that jewellery was a passion?
Gems and jewellery have been my love since my first visit to India. Aged sixteen I was let loose in the Aladdin’s cave that is the gem palace, Jaipur. There’s nothing as entrancing as burying your hands in chests of pearls, diamonds and emeralds - I was enchanted and have never looked back.
Which piece of jewellery would you never be without during the holidays, and why?
My moon slivers emerald and pink sapphire earrings - they compliment every look and add the right amount of shimmering sparkle to a festive party, particularly helpful as the season goes on and one looks a little tired!
Which piece of jewellery would you put under your tree… for yourself?
Every year I design one personal piece - this year it is my hand made articulated gold, diamond and sapphire fish pendant. My beloved mother gave me an antique gold Burmese fish pendant for Christmas years ago when she was very sick and this is my homage to her.
If you could share one piece of your jewellery with anyone - what would you share and with who?
My gold Ouroboros ring, they come as a pair but can be unscrewed and worn separately. I gave one to my best friend years ago and she says it has been like I am holding her hand through the tough times, which has been particularly important these last two years that we have been separated by Covid. I have its' sister ring and it feels like a golden thread ties us together across the world.
And which piece from the Covett Vault is first on your list to welcome 2022 with, and why?
I would wear my caged bullet earrings as they bold, bright and hint at danger and unrealised potential - the right attitude to bring in a new year.
